Nelson Mandela and Moses Kotane during the Treason Trial 1958

At dawn on 5th December 1956 the police swooped down on 150 political leaders and academics that were rounded up, arrested and charged with treason.

On 13th October 1958, Moses Kotane (left) and Nelson Mandela (right) leave the Pretoria court beaming with joy as the Crown had withdrawn the indictment. However, on 19th January 1959, Nelson Mandela and 29 others were put on trial again, only to be found not guilty two years later.
